Ashburton (Maori: Hakatere) The main service centre for the district, combines city shopping and dining with rural friendliness. Ashburton is the commerical centre of Mid Canterbury, but there is plenty of activities to keep you entertained, including the EA Network Centre that features several heated swimming pools, spa and steam room. There are multiple golf courses, an international hockey pitch, and a tennis centre, all in easy walking distance from your central accommodation. If you are a water enthusiast you can swim, row, water-ski or fish at Lake Hood. If you love the outdoors there are numerous breath-taking tramps and cycle tracks on your doorstep.
A short drive away in the region lies the beautiful Canterbury High Country with a huge range of walking and biking trails, stunning lakes, ski areas and thermal pools.

Ashburton Aviation Museum

Trotts Gardens
The creation of Trott’s Garden has been a journey of dedication and imagination, as over the years it has been transformed from a bare paddock, into the extraordinary contemporary garden it is today.
Come and wander around the award winning gardens – there are many spots to enjoy. The garden is accessible to prams and wheelchairs in most areas.
Self or Guided Tours are available upon request for groups of 10 or more, and Morning, Afternoon Tea, or Lunch can be provided if required.
Lake Hood
Whether your idea of evening and weekend relaxation is yachting, water-skiing, fishing, swimming, or simply enjoying a picnic bedside the crystal clear, spring and river-fed waters, there’s something for everyone at Lake Hood.
There’s also the popular Lake House restaurant within walking distance. The restaurant is one of Canterbury’s best kept secrets, offering dining either indoors or outdoors near the shores of the lake.
Braided Rivers / Lake Hood Trail
Try this 16.4-km out-and-back trail near Ashburton, Canterbury. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 3 h 28 min to complete. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and mountain biking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are June through April.
Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.
The Lake Hood Trail is a shared path popular for walking, running, and mountain biking. It will take you through the forest, along the bank of the Ashburton River to the top of Lake Hood. You can also walk/ride around the lake before going back and even stop in at the Lake House Restaurant for a drink and bite to eat.
EA Networks Centre
The EA Networks Centre located in Ashburton is a premier aquatic and sports facility where fitness, fun and family comes together. The EA Networks Centre offers, a 25 metre lane pool, indoor courts, a stream room, hydrotherapy pool and a full gym.
There’s lots for the kids too – a water play area, a lazy river and inflatables provide hours of fun and enjoyment. Whilst the kids are swimming, you can take that much needed break at the onsite Cafe.
Ashburton Golf Club
In close proximity to the Hotel is the Ashburton Golf Club which makes up one of the 17 courses in the Aorangi area. It is an 18-hole course located 1km north of the Ashburton township just off State Highway 1. It is one of the top courses in Canterbury and has full irrigation from tee to green. It offers easy walking, top quality golfing conditions all year round and is well maintained with very good greens.
Ashburton Golf Club also has a driving range that can be used 7 days a week.
